Introduction

Hi, I'm
Sunny Sangar.

Data analysis and bioinformatics.

I'm a data analyst with a background in biology and a Master's in Bioinformatics. I like using data to explore questions that interest me, from microbial communities to cycling safety, and building tools I can use myself.

About

I work across data, technical problem-solving, and building tools that are actually useful. My background is in biology, but what draws me in is practical problems where the solution has to work, whether that's an imaging pipeline, a sales dashboard, or a browser extension I built because I needed it myself.

I like figuring things out. If something isn't working I'd rather dig into it than work around it, and I use whatever tool fits the job. Outside of work I'm into cycling, tennis, fantasy books, and reading about aging biology and biomarker tracking. Usually have a side project on the go.

Projects

Bioinformatics and Data

MATLAB / Neuroscience

CalcCatch

Developed for my MSc research to automate region-of-interest detection in calcium imaging data. Takes raw neuroscience imaging datasets, identifies active cell regions automatically, and outputs structured results that would otherwise require months of manual annotation. Roughly doubled the detection accuracy of the standard toolbox.

Python / Molecular Diagnostics

Aptamer Pipeline

Python pipeline for identifying candidate aptamers (short DNA sequences that bind to specific targets, used in diagnostics and biosensors) from raw HT-SELEX sequencing data. Tracks how promising sequences change across selection rounds, helping avoid candidates that only look strong at a single point.

Python / Bioinformatics / Microbial Ecology

Sourdough Microbial Networks

Can microbes found together in sourdough actually coexist? Benchmarks seven methods using microbial sequencing data from 500 starters against 28 lab experiments. A reproducible Python analysis that tests how well statistical predictions hold up against experimental evidence.

Data & Tools

Browser Extension / JavaScript

BGG Price Compare AU

Built because I needed it myself, this browser extension compares Australian board game prices directly on BoardGameGeek pages to make local price checking faster.

React / Decision Framework

VERDICT

Standalone decision tool built to tackle buying decision paralysis. Compares options using several decision-making methods and shows how changes in your priorities affect the result. No AI or external APIs.

Experience

Data Analyst

Desire International Ltd, Hong Kong
Nov 2022 – Jul 2026
  • Analysed sales, pricing, and product data using SQL, Python, and Excel to identify patterns, delivering weekly reports to 5-6 stakeholders across Sales and Marketing to support commercial decisions.
  • Built dashboards and automated reporting workflows that cut report turnaround from around 3 hours to under 2, reducing delays by 40% and making recurring analysis faster and more reliable.
  • Maintained a structured product database of around 200 SKUs to improve reporting consistency and data reliability.

Sports Officer

International House, Melbourne
Feb 2025 – Jul 2025
  • Coordinated logistics and equipment for community sports events to keep delivery organised and running smoothly.
  • Managed sports inventory and event setup in a busy residential college environment.

Data Research Assistant

Ark Global, Hong Kong
Jun 2021 – Sep 2021
  • Analysed market data in Python and Excel to identify demand patterns and turn raw data into usable reporting for procurement and inventory decisions.
  • Built automated pipelines to consolidate data from multiple sources, saving around 3 hours of manual preparation time per cycle and improving consistency across reporting outputs.
